Quarry Garden is located at the centre of Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden, covering an area of 4.26 hectares (10.53 acres).
As one of the core scenic spots of the botanical garden, this project offers opportunities for changing the severely damaged quarry into an eco-friendly public space, while the unique spatial form also provides possibilities for designers to achieve an unusual landscape.
Ever since 1980, when the mining was stopped, the site had been abandoned. 30 years later, designers redefine the meaning of “LANDSCAPE FOR PEOPLE” -- design is not only based on thethe common needs of general public, but also on excavating the identity and potentials of the site.
Chenshan Hill is nearly 70 meters (229.7 feet) high, and its appearance was greatly affected by quarries. Two quarries on the east and west of the hillwere formed in 1980s. Besides, one deep pool is left in the west quarry because of the exploration and excavation.
By carefully arranging series of paths and sightseeing spots that offer different views, this project combines ecological restoration and a unique horticultural garden, where visitors have open choices in a limited space.
Thus a dreamy, amazing and exciting multifaceted experience of Eastern utopia would be created. At the end of the route, visitors were taken back to the fourth nature (restored nature), where they were encouraged to reflect on the meaning of nature and human’s relationship with it.
