Brooklyn-based design and fabrication studio, FLATCUT_ showcased their collaboration with designer Dror Benshetrit at this year’s Museum of Art and Design (MAD) annual fundraiser. THE METALBALL, MAD’s annual young patrons gala, seeks to attract young arts patrons and collectors who champion emerging voices and artistic innovation in the global arts and design community. Dror was one of 38 contributing artists, from Rick Owens to Michael Stipe, which curators invited to participate this year. The design process was realized at StudioDror in New York and actualized in Flatcut’s 100,000 square foot fabrication studio in Passaic, NJ.
The piece, titled 'Volume' is an evolution of a previously produced 3D SLS print by Materialise. Now taking form in metal, the 39"x39"x37" collapsible sculpture was laser cut from twelve-gauge steel on a CNC Trumpf TruMatic 6000L and rusted to highlight the material's organic properties and to suggest the element of time. An aggregation of Dror’s patented geometry, Volume ranges in applications from products and installations to architectural structures, with each sculpture assigned a numeric identifier: (number of pieces)-(number of layers)-(height of each piece)-(number of vertical pieces)-(gauge number). This incarnation, 60-10-12-3-12, is the prototype for a 36’ x 36’ x 36’ installation proposal, or 220-20-24-18-5.
