As a renowned hometown of overseas Chinese with profound heritage, Qingtian has 66% of its population spread across 146 countries worldwide, with 96% concentrated in Europe. Though modest in size, the city exudes a distinctive international character. In response to its urban positioning and the government's aspirations, we envision a "bespoke" work that integrates Qingtian's unique identity with European culture—a piece that serves as both an urban hub and a symbol of the city's spirit, while presenting the beautiful values of the city and its urban life, fostering a harmonious coexistence between visitors and residents. Its internal public spaces extend the city inward, allowing urban energy to flow seamlessly through the building. Conceived as urban architecture, the project functions as an open gallery connected to surrounding streets, sports facilities, commercial programs, and a public square.
At its core, it strengthens urbanity by celebrating everyday public life while offering generous, highly livable open spaces. The public square and building accommodate thousands simultaneously, forming a cohesive civic realm that is inclusive, vibrant, and expressive of collective social life. The microclimate dimension within the overall design ensures the quality of livability.
A defining architectural gesture is the cross-vault structural system, formed as a unified composition using a single material cast in continuous volumes. This integrates space, structure, and form into one architectural expression, giving a strong sculptural presence.
The materiality is anchored by high-density concrete, enriched with local sand and natural pigments. The texture and color elevate the tectonic quality, offering a tactile and atmospheric experience that feels rooted and timeless.
The complex steel-structured corridor staircases, the custom U-glass curtain walls with dynamic artistic effects, the large retractable dome roof (which must fully open within one minute to meet fire safety requirements) … all of these are virtually innovations.
The architecture behaves like a theater of urban life. It offers immersive and spatially rich experiences and a sequence of views that are rarely encountered in daily environments, engaging visitors with its spatial drama.
