The PXG Building, a notable seven-story structure, is situated prominently at the corner of Nonhyeon-ro in Dogok-dong, Seoul, embodying the heritage and culture of the luxury golf brand, PXG (Parsons Xtreme Golf). This architectural endeavor was driven by the dual objectives of sustainability and encapsulating PXG's bold image to infuse vitality into the cityscape. The facade serves as a testament to this vision, showcasing the brand's signature 'black' hue across three materials: terracotta panels, ceramic slabs, and PVDF-coated aluminum panels.
The terracotta panels, treated with a Special Engobe and adorned with a unique corrugated pattern, dynamically interact with changing daylight. Transitioning from a rich blue in the morning to a striking black at midday, and ultimately shifting into golden or sunset tones in the evening, the facade offers a captivating transformation that adds depth to the building's texture and color scheme.
Deliberate design choices ensure a comfortable light and thermal environment within the building. Eighteen vertical sunbreaker walls, strategically positioned at 1620mm intervals, effectively mitigate direct western light while harnessing reflective indirect light. These walls, measuring 400mm wide, 34m high, and protruding 1.4m from the external wall surface, bolster the structure against wind loads and the weight of external cladding materials through a robust Vierendeel truss made of 100mm x 100mm square steel tubes.
A notable architectural feature is the multi-terraced structure, conceived to address post-pandemic needs and the scarcity of outdoor space in Seoul city. Despite height constraints, optimizing the floor area ratio was vital, and this was achieved by incorporating outdoor terraces across six floors and gradually reducing the building size on the north and east sides. These terraces seamlessly blend internal workspaces with external relaxation areas, fostering a symbiotic relationship between nature and architecture. They not only provide fresh air and greenery but also promote social interaction among building users, contributing to a healthier and more vibrant work environment.
In addition, a free and flexible space arrangement was essential to support the company's unique, creative and collaborative work style, and for this, a 15m x 16m column-free space was built through the post-tension girder system. Additionally, this is a structure that allows easy remodeling, reducing construction waste and improving the sustainability of the building.
