The PV POD is a patented High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) container designed to mount single photovoltaic modules to flat roof tops. With over 30 billion square feet of existing commercial flat roof space in the United States, Metalab along with industry partner Standard Renewable Energy identified this abundance of untapped flat roof space as a market with great potential for rethinking how solar panels are mounted to buildings.
The PV Pod allows for safe and streamlined solar panel installation using only a garden hose and a wrench. Installation requires simply loading the roof with plastic tanks, mounting the panels, arranging the array, filling the tanks with water ballast, and finally wiring the array together and into the building’s electrical grid. Because there is one Pod for each panel, the layout is flexible. Modulating the amount of water ballast in individual tanks allows the array to respond to varying wind loads across the roof as well as minimizes the total weight added to the rooftop.
