This project is to become a campus for a school of arts and acrobatics. It will be the home for more than then two thousand children aged between 6 and 18, aiming to become the world class acrobats and performers we all admire.
More than just a collection of buildings in the green our intention is to create a community for these children with strong architectural identity expressing the characteristics of their training.
Inspired by the elegance of the human body - represented in the fluent symbol ‘ren’ and the force of gravity, expressed by the angular symbol ‘tu’, both fundamental elements in the art of acrobatics - we developed a specific but economical architectural language that is adapted to the needs of this community.
The master plan consists of slightly curving yet simple to build concrete structures with plastered brick or glass infill for living, training and studying. The structural grid expressed in the facades with free infill allows to absorb the changes of program that will occur during the further development of this project – unavoidable consequence of the dynamism in current Chinese society.
These volumes are combined with single standing volumes with layered facades that function as places for performance. Positioned in between the linear structures these objects generate focus and strengthen the identity of the divers open spaces.
The landscape in-between and around is shaped into a podium with the soil that comes from the water reservoir that was planned in an earlier phase.
