The location of Pushkinsky Cinema, which is in near proximity to
the historical Red Square in Moscow, requires a careful consideration for the
design of the facade. The surrounding architecture, which is predominantly
neoclassical, characterizes certain period in Russian architecture.
In regards to that we tried to create a design that will start a
dialogue between the present and the past. The new facade will create a balance
between the old and the new and both will be able to complement each other. The
form is generated using the same principals applied to the original design.
Our project introduces one more rule which allows the original
design to transform into a new one. In a way the project is a continuation of
the old one. Using polygonal forms and sharp edges the design tries to give
itself monumentality and contemporary look.
This allows the new facade to engage in contemporary Russian
architecture. Because of the current Cinema’s monumentality we felt a need to
preserve it to a degree. Therefore we build the new facade on the old
structure. By doing this we connected both the old and the new.
Polygonal forms on the new facade are clouded with Du Pont
product (Du Pont CORIAN® FOR EXTERIOR CLADDING). The narrow openings in the
forms are clouded with glass. There is a direct relationship between the
building facade and the urban context of the site. These cuts represent major
street lines between Red Square and The Cinema. The streets of the site are
directly translated on the facade. One of the forms (South-East) is covered
with panels with wood texture to allow for contrast. The structure of the
facade is light weight steel frame which is economical, modular, and easy to
install.
