The
primary goal of this project was to allow the public to form a new type of
interaction with the building.
This
goal was achieved by wrapping the building with a new function: The Museum
of Cinema. The museum was wrapped around the building using a system of
ramps, and is using existing walls as exhibit areas.
By
removing the ornaments that accumulated on the building over the years and
removing the old screen wall, we have re-utilized the vast space, exposed the
iconographic shape of the building and restore the city's cultural icon.
The
museums’ visitor trail begins in the renewed esplanade which has been moved
from the center of the building to the side in order to allow the façade to
reach the street that lies at its feet and in order to allow an additional
access to the building.
The
trail continues upon a set of ramps which lift the visitor into the space and
allows panoramic view to the boulevard ahead. The geometry of this Corian™ covered folding ramps make it
possible to present some of the exhibits upon the ramps themselves. In this way
we managed to eliminate the ramp dependency on the old building's walls for exhibition
area.
The
purpose of these folding ramps changes along the trail and in addition to the
exhibition space they also offer seating area facing the view and study areas
in an open auditorium.
The
building, along with the ramps system, was covered with glass wrapping of DuPont™ Sentry Glass™ which can be opened to give
natural ventilation in summer and kept close for greenhouse effect in winter,
which allows passive heating of the space.
By
these actions we restore the iconographic shape of the building and create a
new method by which the people can interact with the building.
