Purdue University’s Discovery Learning Research Center (DLRC) now has a home in the new Hall for Discovery and Learning Research. DLRC’s mission is to advance research that revolutionizes learning in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) disciplines. Through research projects, innovative programs, and collaborative partnerships, DLRC is committed to redesigning educational practices and creating innovative learning environments that have immediate impacts and nurture lifelong learning for students and citizens of a global community.
All learning and teaching spaces in DLRC are essentially research spaces. The new building provides creative learning, science, and project laboratories where experts in academia, industry and K-12 education collaborate to revolutionize learning. Projects within the facility explore novel technologies and pedagogies designed to enhance learning at all levels.
The flexible design allows researchers to reconfigure rooms for learning pods of various sizes, use technology, adjust breakout rooms and spaces, vary seating arrangements, and even alter acoustics and lighting. The black-box rooms, with movable walls and furniture, help researchers experiment with the environment. A theatrical tension grid provides overhead flexibility.
The Hall for Discovery and Learning Research also includes the Alfred Mann Institute for biomedical development; ADVANCE-Purdue which develops models for faculty recruitment, retention and advancement; the George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation; the Susan Bulkeley Butler Center for Leadership Excellence; the Center for Analytical Instrumentation Development; the Healthcare Technical Assistance Program and the Network for Computational Nanotechnology.
