This project for a hotel and bath
house in North Philadelphia was initiated by an interpretation of Vito
Acconci’s following studies. People from the site and parts of center city,
Philadelphia, were followed, and their paths were documented, emphasizing their
beginning and terminal destinations. These destinations were formally analyzed
as meaningful typologies within the city structure in terms of the path of the
followee, the quality of space inhabited by the followee (volume connecting the
path to the edge of the built boundary) and the spatial boundary determined by
the built environment. Using these three realms of spatial inhabitance (path,
quality and form) a new typology was created and interpreted in terms of an
individual unit; a pixel.
From these
pixels (reinterpretations of existing urban typologies and their uses) a new
urbanization was created. This new type of city is an accumulation of these pixels.
In this pixelized landscape, urban spaces are created by the connection of
path, the accrual of quality (public) space and the morphogenetic relationships
of existing forms.
This
technique of creating new urban typologies through the reinterpretation of
existing fabric is at the heart of the final design for the hotel and bath
house. The goal here was not only to refabricate formal relationships, but also
to continually interpret these relationships on the basis of intimacy. The
intimacy one has to their surroundings as well as those around them (even in
situations unbeknownst to them, as in the case of a stalker and their prey) was
of particular interest to this project, as its highly personal and private
program is situated in a location which begs to community integration and
involvement. This dichotomy between program and locale begs the question: what
is public intimacy?
The
response, for me, becomes an interpretation of the relationship between city,
individual and community. This relationship, in the project for the hotel and
bath becomes the space of individualized program (pools, hotel rooms, therapy
rooms) sandwiched between the external public environment of the city and the internal
environment of which is public. The skin both shapes and is shaped by the
synthesis of these ideas (pixel, program, intimacy), its punctures controlling
the various degrees of light and privacy obtained within the individualized
programs. The qualities of these spaces become direct translations of the
results of the initial following studies whereby the path, quality and form of
the initial pixels are embedded within the language of public intimacy.
