The proposal’s base concept is the creation of a walking rooftop, which not only protects the lower platform of the ‘Praça 2 de Maio’ in accordance to the competition program, as it offers Viseu’s city a new green space. The suspended garden (the new rooftop) does not overlap or mischaracterizes the existing building by its formal lightness and will probably contribute to the city’s landmarks.
In essence the project extends the public space and its ability to simultaneously accommodate different uses. On the lower level, the square blends into the car parking giving it a multifunctional role and enhancing other uses apart from the obvious one. At the rooftop level, the square extends to the new suspended garden, a place for relaxation and fun conducting activities. Two vertical elements, almost dissolved in the surrounding for its architectural characteristics, guarantee a universal pedestrian access between the two platforms of the square.
In short, instead of one, the proposal generates two squares - the lower square, protected, sheltered, which ensures a comfortable annual use preferably designed to hold events; and the upper square, open, abundantly lit, relaxed and informal, aimed to the leisure activities.
