When the renovation of gas station is the way to glorify skill of the craftsman in Chiang Mai, Thailand
PTT Saraphi is a renovation of the old sale building of gas station in Chiangmai that considered a province that has own interesting craft movements. Sher maker begins to design by questioning the possibility of participation of local people by using materials and skills that local craftsmanship studio and factory that has potential and expertise as a building material. The materials used must be created from the combination of knowledge, experimentation of local makers are working together that real income form this raw material distribution to real local entrepreneurs.
By considering cultural context as used of the ceramic roof tile of Lanna culture (Northern of Thailand Area) is developed to façade material of this project.
Sher maker has co-developed ceramic tiles with 3 ceramic studios.
Chatchaiwat studio and Maerim ceramic are consultant for the material testing process. Final production with Saraphi ceramic art and design, which located in the same area as the gas station.
Because of the existing location and height of this building, only one physical context of this façade will be connected is the sky. So the ceramic facade is designed to be linked to the color of the sky during the changing times in a day. With the different reflect angle of curve faced surface. Old style luster pearl glaze is used for this tile for plays with the reflection of sunlight. The charm of this glazing will have a slightly different color, resulting in a rhythm that reflects the environment of the architecture at different times. Pearl coating technique is a technique that the factory was able to develop a production system that supports the building materials which fully potential of the technicians in the factory.
