PS 19X serves the growing Woodlawn Heights area of the north Bronx, from kindergarten through eighth grade. The existing school dates from 1924 and houses a student body that has long been in excess of its design capacity. RKTB designed an addition to relieve the pressure on the existing facility and accommodate approximately two hundred additional students.
The new building will include an enclosed gymnasium for the first time in the school’s history, a modern administrative suite, and a “cafetorium” or combined cafeteria and auditorium – one of the only public schools in New York City to have such a space. With a new main entrance, lobby, and elevators, all of the new building and almost all spaces in the existing building will be made accessible to students with disabilities.
