The Providence Canyon Residence is set into a gently sloping site at the base of Providence Canyon near the foot of the Mahogany Range in Northern Utah. Designed for an active couple and their family of six, the Providence Canyon home is an open and warm space for the family, filled with natural light and generous spaces. Having designed a previous home for the client a decade earlier, some design objectives were familiar, though a different site called for specific attention to specific objectives; creating living spaces with ample daylight, ventilation, outdoor access and both canyon and valley views.
The organization of a central circulation corridor links the entry, work areas and active spaces on the south with the kitchen, dining and family room. The corridor bridges the indoor spaces with the courtyard and saturates the central pavilion with daylight from windows on both sides. A bedroom suite and private study cap the circulation spine at the north end. The bedroom wing is raised several feet to provide screened sight lines out to the courtyard while maintaining privacy from the bedroom and office spaces.
With wings of the courtyard slightly widening to embrace the pool and open lawn areas, the daylighting pattern of the courtyard was modeled and adjusted to provide morning and early afternoon sun while shading outdoor dining areas from harsh afternoon and evening solar gain. Similarly, eaves and roof extensions were formed for efficiency in extending shade and shelter throughout the seasons of the year. A classic white ceiling surface, separated simply with a rhythm of sloping beams, extends light into the kitchen, dining and living areas from both sides of the home.
Natural materials were selected for both the exterior and the interior of the home, reflecting an informal and inviting lifestyle. The exterior is clad in a grayed cedar and contrasting white limestone. The interior finishes include honey-colored wood floors and millwork enriching the home with warmth, while natural linen, wool upholstery, and wood and leather furnishings invite lingering throughout the day and evening.
