Mass-Volume
The
competition requirements for the phases implementation gave us two main
options: To separate the buildings accordingly with their uses, which resulted
on buildings with slabs that had too little area for the respective use and
constructions too close from each other, hence we opted for the use of a single
building , unifying the whole usage of it, improving its intrinsic integration
of it´s circulations and spaces, and its visual effect from the inside and the
outside, providing a higher quality space over time.
Building
Skin
The
weaved skin, made of metal perforated metal sheets, was our starting point.
Something that really related with the indigenous population that lives around
Palmas, once a large population and now survives mostly of its craftsmanship,
selling it to tourists and export.
That
skin also acts as a filter of the strong heat from the sun and the almost
constant 35ºC, allowing the air circulation and providing a large shaded area
for cover in the hottest days.
Also,
the idea for the open “plaza” on the ground floor came from the continuity of
the master plan from Palmas, which prioritizes open and wide spaces. Allowing
the users to experience a nice show underneath the building , shelter from the
heat present almost all year there. And
so we proposed two main accesses to the building. One would take the user to
the restaurant, a pleasant view and climate above the plaza, the other would
take you to the IAB entrance and its superior offices.
