The core idea for this condominium revolved around
“global citizenship”, the idea that because we belong to an internet age where
information is easily accessible and merely a click away, the world is
literally getting smaller, making us not just citizens of our own countries but
of the entire world.
A nomadic culture is thus developed by this new
paradign shift as we constantly move around, acquiring different tastes and
styles as any traveler of the world.
The space therefore has to be exciting (to mimic
this kind of high-paced lifestyle of nomads) and flexible (to adjust to the
varied way a wanderer would use a particular space).
Exciting
Because of the rapid exchange of information, life
would unfold faster in one’s eyes. This idea of “unfolding” was therefore
interpreted physically in the space. Door openings would cut-out from
partitions and fold up towards the slab soffits and meet with other “unfolded”
planes that ultimately form the angled ceiling configuration.
Flexible
The condominium is flexible in terms of space.
Fixed partitions are avoided in the planning. Instead, partitions are actually
sliding frosted glass doors that slide out of view allowing each space to flow
into each other to attain an expansive space. Spaces can therefore achieve
different levels of intimacy.
The condominium is flexible in terms of furniture.
Most pieces in the condo morphs to increase and decrease its capacity,
depending on the requirement of a particular event. A built in bench can actually
fold out to become a generous U-shaped sofa. The dining table can be folded up
into the wall to free up the floor space in the event of a large gathering.
Sofa beds are chosen for seating to allow guests to sleep over. Chairs are
stackable and can be hidden away from sight.
Lastly, the condominium is flexible in terms of
personalization. All sufaces of the condominium are rendered in white. It is
conceived as a canvass, one that is easier to personalize according to the
user’s taste and preferences. As a nomad’s style evolves constantly because of
his exposure to different scenes, the space could easily receive any kind of
color pallette even if it frequently changes.
