The main objective of the conversion project for the port area of the city of Tangier is to allow the “city of the straits” to position itself as a leading destination for both cruise and leisure tourism on an international scale. This project represents a huge opportunity to give the port infrastructure a new lease of life. It will provide the city of Tangier with a touristic and cultural offering that has strong additional value, building on the different restructuration projects that have been launched over the last few years, across the region and the rest of the Kingdom. Before deciding on the best conversion options for the site, the Société d’Aménagement for the port area of the city of Tangier undertook a large number of studies carried out by teams of internationally renowned multidisciplinary experts hired specifically for the purpose. Bringing the sea to the city was the key idea informing the outline design for the works in the port area (drawing of water). Thus, the water retrieves its former boundaries— before the successive extensions of the port’s landfill areas— in three emblematic locations.
