The
TempelhofAirport
site is a former airfield bordering diverse neighborhoods and open spaces in
the heart of Berlin, Germany. The scale of the defunct
airfield provides opportunities for ecological urban development on undeveloped
lands. dlandstudio approached the proposalby
researching zero impact development methodologies based on productive landscape
strategies with an emphasis on urban ecology, water management, agro-forestry,
and urban agriculture.
Environmental
conditions such as prevailing wind, light and air circulation patterns were
integral to creating the urban form of the master plan. The new core landscape
strengthens the physical connection to existing neighborhoods and parks. Three
dense urban developments are conceptualized as areas where urban structures
mediate between water, agriculture and forest landscapes. The master plan is to
be developed in phases which optimize land use, environmental benefits and
property value in order to create a zero impact, ecologically sustainable
development.
