Perched on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, this 6,000-square-foot, five-bedroom private residence was designed as a modern retreat—an oasis for multi-generational living where family and guests can gather, unwind, and experience the natural beauty of the site throughout the year. DMAC’s design balances privacy and openness, framing spectacular western views of dune grasses, sandy shoreline, and endless sunsets while bringing the outdoors in through material and spatial continuity.
From the eastern approach, a free-standing wood-slat screen guides you to an intimate entry courtyard that offers subtle glimpses through the home to the lake beyond. A textured brick wall borders the courtyard, its patterned relief catching winter snow to capture the dynamic seasonal change. This wall continues seamlessly into the interior foyer, reinforcing a strong connection between exterior and interior architecture. Inside, panoramic views draw visitors toward the great room and tiered patio, where the landscape unfolds in layers toward the water.
The second-floor landing doubles as a light-filled gallery for the owner’s art collection, softly illuminated by clerestory windows that provide diffused natural light, eliminating shadows for best viewing while preserving the artwork. The gallery connects the bedrooms and master suite, serving as both circulation and contemplative space.
Above, a third-floor den with floor-to-ceiling glass on the west and south façades opens to a rooftop terrace, extending the living space into the outdoors shaded by the canopy of a large cottonwood tree. From the bluff to the beach, the site is planted with native dune grasses, preserving the ecological character of the shoreline. At the water’s edge, a repurposed shipping container clad in ash echoes the home’s material palette, transformed into a “beach box” with angular overhangs that form a shaded front porch—a quiet complement to the house above.
