Primark Catbalogan is the prototype for a series of projects that seek to bring about a new experience and improve the current situation of marketplaces located in provincial cities throughout the Philippines. The different marketplaces are given a distinct image and yet varying characters using a methodology, which combines a series of steps comprising a structured template, with Town Center placemaking, which diversifies the structures by extracting certain qualities from the existing market and community. This strongly ties together the town center and the locality in which it is found.
Tracing its history back to ancient times, the marketplace remains a significant part of modernday societies. From the Greek agora, to the Arabic souk, the Spanish mercado and the Philippine palengke, the marketplace has been the center of community life where the daily lives of people revolved. This typology, other than being known as one of mankind’s most significant meeting places, reflects the community it is located in.
A much newer typology by comparison to the marketplace is the shopping mall. The shopping mall has pervaded its way into popularity, especially in the Philippines. It conveniently brings together various facets such as banks, recreational and cultural spaces and even religious functions under one roof. Like the marketplace, it serves a function that transcends commerce and extends to the social and interpersonal aspects of its different locales.
