Set in the frigid allure of the arctic, Pyramiden, once alive with the quest for coal, can take solace in a proposal set to breathe new life into its foundations…
Pyramiden now showcases moments living in history via a pathway that cuts and ultimately shapes the landscape views and participation of the visitor. The walkway, in and of itself, is a representational void created by the people that once called it home. The depth, width and overall wandering nature of the path are derived from the varied sub-context of the area. The program is key for stirring interest at important locations and viewpoints throughout the site. The pathways alone can open up into grand plazas creating versatile, hyper-functional spaces. One can literally walk underneath and within influential buildings of the community. This myriad trek also lends the opportunity to peer upwards through the glass that takes the place of floorboards and sectional pathways. This exhibit space is optimized by granting the visitor a full range of desirable viewing space and fun sensory experiences traveling through the deep set pathways.
Undoubtedly, the best outlook for Pyramiden is from the pyramid mountain itself. If the landscape is not breathtaking enough, the warm glow from the lighting below can entice a longing gaze and create quite a stir. The floating phenomenon invoked by the placement of lighting below the buildings is meant to frame the site in a way that emphasizes the precarious impermanence of man-made structures on the face of our ever-changing earth. The site itself exudes this feeling, as it is flanked by the frozen power of glaciers that cover the area. The striking beauty of nature alongside a forlorn town that was once utilized only through a brief moment of history highlights the fleeting gift of existence that time grants us.
The sharp elegance of this site will not be preserved by a team continuously perfecting every wrinkle that may appear over time, but rather by embracing the face of aging and the irreplaceable artistry of the process.
Our ambition is to embrace the challenging notion of time and what it means in an age when preservation techniques are longingly involved with “youth”. We invite visitors to experience this progression of age and the frozen beauty of abandonment through various vantage points and contexts throughout the site.
