This project made for 4th IABR - International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam Objective: to adapt the Soviet mikrorayon [mini-district] to the needs of people today.
Solution: to use parts and standard components
developed in the USSR in the 1960s and 70s to radically change the residential
environment without the need for changes to production techniques.
This project proposes employing used standard parts
from the K-7 and other similar series, as well as components currently
available from prefab-house manufacturers today.
Specifications for the street blocks:
1. Houses
with small apartments accessed from corridors. The corridor may or may not have
natural lighting.
2. The
span for residential units is 3600
mm and for blocks 14,400 mm.
3. Number
of storeys: 6-15.
4. There
will be public and recreational areas alongside the corridors, for residents to
relax and interact with each other in.
5. The
plinths of the buildings will contain car parking spaces; vegetation will be
planted on the roof.
6. Apartments
will be multi-level, dual aspect, and have a double-height living room.
7. There
will be services and small retail units on the ground floor.
8. There
will be covered balconies with sliding windows (emergency exits in each unit).
9. Re-used
components will be insulated to preserve heat and reduce sound.
