The planning- and construction
period was predetermined by the "Start of Production (SOP)" of Audi
A1 production processes, which should be optimised under simulated production
run condition in the VSC (pre-production centre). The subdivision of the hall
corresponds to an optimisation process of single working cycles. Each works in
the VSC are carried out for the most part in handwork. Because the
functionalism stands here in the foreground, the technology is emphasised by
colour diversity. Floors, walls and roofs are kept in restrained white and
bright colours, whereas the black cubes, which accommodate the master offices,
form the only exception. The operation of the VSC demands an additional area of
approx. 650m² for offices nearby. Therefore a part of the adverse production-
and storage hall has been remodeled. The existing facade covered by trapezoidal
sheet is completely detached and substituted by a new glazed
post-and-rail-facade. The high glass front allows an effective use of daylight
and gives more independence to the office area in the existing structure. The
main entrance to the office area is connected with the VSC -building by a glass
roof, which allows a comfortable exchange between both areas. A mainly open
office structure determines the interior space, only the chief-offices, the
conference room and the kitchenette are separated by glass walls
