Destroyed in 1945, the famous Dresden City boulevard Prager Strasse was rebuilt, as an exemplary socialist urban development. Orientated on the contemporary European architecture of the time, with ample building space, they managed to create an impressive ensemble of architecture and art.
To this day Prager Street remains an object of and setting for, artistic intervention. At 240 m long and with over 600 apartments, it is supposedly Germanys largest residential building – stretching the complete length of the street. None the less, it was used as a stage and backdrop for the performance „Panzerkreuzer Potemkin“ by the Pet Shop Boys. The intensive use and the unfortunate colour-scheme applied to it in the 90s, led to it gaining the reputation, of an eye-sorer in the city. Owners and city-planners, but also architecture enthusiastic citizens and artist, all paricipated in the discssions about the buildings future. Even a complete demolition was considered. Eventually the decision was met, to retain and undertake a complete renovation of the block. After the renovation, the building has once again become a decent city block. Spanning from simple low cost student apartments, to luxurious penthouses, with a magnificent view, it caters for a very diverse cross-section of society. The resulting characterful building, had finally given the location and therewith, this important district of Dresdens intercity, a positive influence.
The new loggia parapets, generate an expressive graphic pattern, that is enhanced through the new colour-scheme. This structure is intervened with striking “city-loggia” that allow the light to flow into the corridor areas of the apartments but also play an important role in the fire safety concept of the building.
This project was exhibited as part of the 8th International Architecture Biennale in São Paulo, has been widely published and won Architekturpreis Zukunft Wohnen and Best Architects 10.
