Taking its place beside Toronto’s oldest Post Office and George Brown College’s downtown campus, this twenty-one storey residential building responds to a variety of scales and adjacencies. A generous setback from the historic Post Office creates a new landscaped courtyard: a place of repose for residents, office workers and students; a passage that connects George Street to the College campus; and an open-air museum containing traces of the site’s historical significance.
The ground floor lobby and meeting rooms open directly onto the courtyard and act as a buffer between the courtyard and a service driveway. An existing student pathway between Adelaide and Richmond is widened and provided with new landscaping and seating. Along George Street, the building’s base is designed to provide a continuation of the scale and materiality of the historical buildings. Above the base, a straightforward modernist vocabulary of continuous balconies screened by steel verticals enhances the building’s role as a neutral back-drop to the surrounding structures. Post House is targeting a Tier-2 certification through the City of Toronto’s Green Development Standard (TGS).
