Four tree canopies with a rectilinear void carved out of the foliage form the Chapel, creating an organic, intimate space for the wedding ceremonies. Twelve brass bells hang from the tree branches and are embellished with colored ribbons specific to each ceremony, individualizing the event. Witnesses may sit on two wooden benches—pre-fabricated and attached on-site—spanning the planters along either side. The Chapel symbolically extends the tree canopy of Central Park into the paved space in front of Merchents’ Gate, creating a naturally animated filigree. The chapel envelopes each couple in dappled shade during this deeply personal event, while simultaneously allowing views for the wedding party and the crowds in Columbus Circle. At the end of the day the trees are to be planted, ideally in Central Park, to stand as a marker of the day for the couples and New Yorkers writ large. Wood from the planters and benches will be re-purposed for permanent installation under the shade of the planted trees and could include plaques commemorating the passage of the Marriage Equality Act. Further, each couple is invited to take home a bell as a personal memento of their experience in the Chapel.
