The ICRAVE pop up chapel is one of two winning submissions to the Pop Up Chapel competition celebrating marriage equality. On July 30th, 2011 from 10 AM to 8 PM this project will pop up in Merchant’s Gate (Central Park) and act as the setting for 24 very special same-sex marriages.
The ICRAVE chapel is a unique escape from its surroundings, providing a private sanctuary for the ceremonial union of two people.
The chapel’s main form is a metal frame lashed and concealed by white ribbon. The form’s ceiling is a sheet of 3 x 3 inch lightweight wire mesh, reinforced by metal stiffeners. At each intersection in the mesh, a ribbon is attached, patterned to leave a parabola-shaped interior gathering space. The exterior ribbons are white and full-length, but as you enter the chapel the white gives way to vibrantly colored ribbons, revealing an energetic and flowing backdrop for the ceremony. From the private interior of the chapel you can see breaks of light and glimpses of the surrounding environment. At the end of the ceremony, the couple is asked to tie two of the ribbons together in a symbolic knot, leaving their mark on the chapel.
