'Manduva - Pool Villa' is a weekend retreat home, in the outskirts of Visakhapatnam. The city located along the East coast line of India, has tropical wet and dry climate and is hot year Round.
The idea for the weekend home is to keep the Villa simple and grounded borrowing the local/ traditional architectural elements. The design is a modern take on traditional courtyard houses, called Manduva in the region.
Located at 60 kms North of the city, the plot is a part of gated community nestled amidst farmlands. The Client's brief was to keep it simple and maintenance free.
The house comprises of a ground floor linear structure, with an open Verandah style living area flanked by a semi-covered indoor pool courtyard. Slender metal columns have replaced the ornate columns found in traditional house corridors.
Palmyra, a native palm tree grows abundantly in this region. Its wood and leaves are used in local/ traditional village houses. Borrowing the local element, the wooden screen becomes main design element. And highlighting the same by keeping muted colour palate.
