The Polytechnic
Preparatory Country Day School (Poly Prep) wanted to add a new building
annex to their existing Lower School. The Lower School home is a
four-story limestone mansion that was converted to a school and is in
the Park Slope Historic District. The school is home to pre-K thru
elementary school children. The new building annex would house an
auditorium, which doubled as a gymnasium, computer lab, 5 classrooms,
faculty offices and accessory support facilities. The design of the
building was influenced by the necessity to have a building, which
would duplicate the features of the existing building as well as blend
in harmoniously within the context of the district. The
final scheme of the building is an amalgamation of the design
criterion. The building continues the primary stone band courses of
the mansion in profile and material. The front yard is lined with
built-up limestone planters and matching historic fence along the
sidewalk to maintain the continuity of the property. The annex
connects to the existing building via a glass structure, which bridges
the floors between the two buildings. The glass structure serves to
delineate the existing building with the new building while adding a
touch of modernism. The facade has been designed to appear as two
connected rowhouses while incorporating these features into the facade
design. The facade has two main bays, which feature parlor windows to
mimic the adjacent properties. The primary facade materials were
selected to match the rowhouses, which line the street. Overall,
the final design maintained two different continuities while still
providing a clear visual separation between the existing mansion and
the adjacent rowhouses, which run the entire length of the street.
