The project is located in the understated, seaside township of Point Lonsdale, on an unusually shaped site with a challenging orientation.
The deep nature strip, densely populated with Moonah ti-trees, provided opportunities not often afforded due to privacy concerned. We positioned the building towards the rear of the site, creating a private front yard with north and westerly aspects while borrowing the amenity of the densely wooded nature strip. This afforded us the light and the privacy required.
To further ensure the dwellings privacy, the house was set close to the natural gradient of the site and was stepped over three levels, cascading with the fall of the land. The changes in floor level provided interest within the spaces and harmony with the land. The increasing ceiling heights as the floor level changed, also added a sense of luxury to the parents end of the house, which had the lowest floor level and the highest ceilings.
The spaces were designed to be clean, functional and uncomplicated. Large retractable glass sliders allowed the internal living spaces to merge with the external living areas. Neutral tones with contemporary art highlights made for a calm and joyful interior.
The innovative placement of the dwelling on the site ensured the success of the interior spaces, which are filled with natural light and have excellent passive ventilation throughout the house.
Water tanks and vegetable boxes actively add to the sustainability of the project.
