Virtual Reality
In the new post-digital era, from our homes to our mobile phones, our reality is constructed on both physical and virtual spaces, where special effects are now part of our lives, with VR being one of them. How can we as architects take advantage of the potentials of VR not as an isolated dimension of actual reality but as a means to enhance it? As an architectural studio, we understand the value that VR tools can bring in terms of freedom both as a sketching tool, allowing designers to explore, test and experiment and as a proposing tool, connecting clients to the design process in exciting new ways. In order to operate in this virtual scene it is urgent to deploy new architectural skills and design protocols. Both formats, Virtual and Real, work with the sensorial experience in order to amplify people’s daily life. Under this scope we aim to redefine the rules that VR imposes and think about traditional architecture as something more than mere representation. What does it mean to free ourselves from gravity? What are the potentials of human interaction within the design process? How can VR work as a creative platform between firms for co-designing and sharing knowledge?
Installation
Virtual Reality opens completely new forms of architecture where the perception of things and the way we approach them are under continuous transformation. This is what we focused on in our first solo exhibition ‘’Poetic Pragmatism’’ at the Danish Architecture Centre. In order for Virtual Reality to work well in an exhibition, what the guest saw in the head-set was being projected on a large spatial textile installation. This makes it interesting not only to use VR but also to look at the VR user. Thus, we turn an introverted activity into an extroverted experience. We selected various projects to display in VR, one of them being the installation itself. In this way the visitor could experience the possibilities as well as the limitations of virtual and real space. The installation took place from 8th-29th November 2018 at BLOX, a new public building at the centre of Copenhagen, designed by OMA. The installation forms a contrast to the Staircase Gallery in BLOX. It is soft, vibrant, alive and ephemeral, and connects human interaction with a spatiality that is reflected in itself.
Studio
POINT is a Copenhagen based architectural studio founded in 2013 by Danish architects Laust Sørensen and Michael Droob, strongly engaged with digital design and fabrication tools such as VR and 3D printing. Our ambition is to create durable, aesthetically pleasing solutions that evoke positive emotions and form the basis for creating memories. We believe this is possible by uniting a pragmatic approach with an elegant architectural solution that brings to life the inherent poetry and the unique attributes of the location, and sparks awareness in the beholder in this precise moment.
