The social housing project Sterrenstorm in the district Duinwijk in IJmuiden consists of 35 apartments and a semi covered car park. The project is a homage to the strip buildings of the fifties. Many new buildings turn away from the architecture of this era. We want to offer an alternative as a revaluation of these neighbourhoods.
Duinwijk is an after-war town plan of the city of IJmuiden. The urban design is made by the famous Dutch architect and urban designer Willem Dudok (1884-1974). Duinwijk is on the eve of a large restructuring operation. The district is built with many of the same kind of dwellings: single-family terrace houses and small tenement houses of the fifties. There is a shortage of apartments in the mid-rent segment and houses for elderly.
The residential project Sterrenstorm is the replacement of a block with tenement houses at the Planetenweg. In order to preserve the coherence in the neighbourhood the project relates to the architecture of the existing buildings in Duinwijk with characteristic pitched roofs and chimneys. The site is located close to the coast. The sea wind is firm. The balconies are therefore situated as sheltered outside rooms behind the façade. The roof floor contains apartments that are two bays wide, with large roof terraces. The client, Woningbedrijf Velsen, wanted to realize a very sustainable project. The dwellings are provided with a heat pump and solar water heaters. Adaptable floor plans are possible by the design of a smart piping plan. The architecture of the building is characterized by the attention for the brick work and careful detailing.
The staircases offer views trough the building from the street to the back and from the roof floor to the car park. Through the transparent steel stairs daylight falls into the heart of the entrance hall. The Dutch artist Krijn de Koning has made a work of art that emphasizes the spatial quality of the staircases. The mural paintings stretch from the entrance hall to the ridge of the building. Both staircases have a different colour.
