The Beginning
The house was very old and has been expanded for many times; these cause leakage At many parts of the house. When it is raining, it looks like we have a waterfall in a house. Owner realize that they need to do something because the members in this house, it is not safe for them. She asked our nephew to talk to a young architect. It’s me, to design it for her.
Owner's Project Requirements
She need to create a good environmental Atmosphere for her grandparents. She want them to live in a house Which is airily spacious and neatly clean because both of them spend Most of their time in a sleep at home. In the past, this house was Messed up with a lot of things and insects; She need to move as many Items as she can out off the house and clear the space as soon as possible. her grandparents’ good books and piece of furniture were sold out. Only few pieces of their beloved furniture made and delivered by ship from overseas are remained.
Context Design
About the background of design. Formerly the structure of the house was designed in an early modern style coming to Thailand. Most construction materials were made of wood; certainly, they were ruined by time. Then, replace them with steels. The roofs on the building at the front were removed. The front parts of the house which used to be extended as a garage and a bedroom for owner grandparents were changed into a new form in a modern-tropical style which is different from the former traditional one decorated with the Galae- a traditional decorative style of a roof for a house in the Northern Thailand. The main building and a Thai style kitchen at the back of the house is still remained the same. The owner did not want to change the house too much because her grandparents Might feel uncomfortable and unfamiliar living in house with different styles. At first, I roughly draft a house plan to be in a contemporary style; however, after talking with Owner, I found that she seems to open her mind and like a modern architecture. Consequently, I feel confident to do somethink more; I final adjust the style of the old house, from the maximum style into a minimal one.
More function
I want to make it fit to the both aged grandparents’ lifestyles. They are familiar with the same functions in which they used to live and feel comfortable with. As being easy and not complicated functions, after waking up, the grandparents can easily move into a living room and turning into their sleep after waking up at a living room. I change about the direction of the house to make it harmoniously balance. A kitchen is functionally separated at the back of the house which is easily to reach when they are hungry. All components are remained as the same positions as they are accustomed to. However, a clerestory is changed quite much. I found that and old clerestory was too small, so I knocked down some of the part to create a bigger space. Owner felt shocked when she first saw it because it changed a lot. Anyway, natural lights can get through the house better; it is Unnecessary to turn on the electrical lighting at all. Importantly, the Air can blow through this area to all over the house all day long. Wherever you sit, you will feel easy and cool. It is such a good design That makes this house much appropriate for living.
One of the functional demands of the house is an easy and neat Living; therefore, the house is mainly decorated with white and Grey tones. Most pieces of built-in furniture are designed for cleaning And keeping the house neatly. The door of the showcase is made of Wood to enhance warm looking and livable atmosphere into the House. On the other hand, all of old moveable pieces of furniture are Removed and replaced with new pieces chosen. However; At the time owner saw this building was Becoming into a house, She could remember the moment when Grandmother seat on her favorite sofa with her eyes closed. She looked Happy amidst cooling air on that sofa. And then, She tiredness Disappeared immediately although there were a lot of dramatic event Occurring during the time we were renovating the house.
