The project consists of the refurbishment and interior design of an older apartment located in Eixample, Barcelona, transforming it with newly created spaces. By eliminating the smaller and darker rooms (which is a typical feature located in this type of older flat), the apartment would be able to gain access to day-long natural illumination due to the different orientations in such created spaces.
This work involves serious distribution, creating open and functional spaces without disregarding the privacy within each room. We have built two clearly separated parts, where one part faces the street with open spaces where the kitchen, living and dining room are located, and the other part consisting of a demi-open space, where the secondary living room and master bedroom face the courtyard. The middle part of the apartment incorporates the entrance, service room, 3 secondary bedrooms, and 2 bathrooms that face two inner courtyards.
In the main spaces, the covered ceilings are demolished, and the original beams are left to provide a visual contrast against the white neutral walls. There are only covered ceilings in the entrance, corridor, and bathrooms to hide all hidden installations of the flat. To complete the functionality of the project, we designed two big built-in cabinets for the front and rear spaces, making both with white lacquered MDF and wooden elements similar to the beams of the original refurbished ceilings. Hydraulic tiles on the floors are refurbished and relocated in every room to create a unique atmosphere.
