The iconic structure of the stadium is at the core of a larger urban regeneration project concerning Pisa sport village. In addition to the athletic facilities, the project includes urban connections’ enhancement between the city downtown and the stadium area by means of large parking areas, a coach station and a new train station for visiting fans. From the local train station, it will be possible to reach a 6500 square meters shopping village with 58 stores, accessible all year round.
The concept idea differs from popular enclosed external shell layouts, displaying a double asymmetric membrane instead. The membrane wraps up the grandstands, creating an evocative and ideal embrace of the city to its team and superimposing itself as an important cityscape landmark. The external shell is completed with large glass façades and two wide overhanging roofs shaded by metal brise-soleil. The color choice is not casual and reflects the local football team colors and the city flag’s colors. The structure as a whole appears dynamic and evocative, providing lovely views of the surroundings.
The facility will host two playing fields, one for the first team training and the second for the youth team as well as a resort for athletes. All around, large green areas compliment and integrate functional areas, giving the intervention a strong design unity.
