PILOTI rises with quiet elegance at the threshold of Bellevue’s Downtown Park, an airy rotunda that signals both entry and welcome. Its circular canopy unfolds as an aggregate of umbrellas, joined seamlessly into one flowing surface. Slender, stiletto-thin columns hold the structure aloft, their capitals branching outward in manifold twists where inside becomes outside, and outside folds inward again. Each edge cantilevers with grace, its folded scallops recalling the ornament of historical marquees while providing strength against the wind.
At the heart of its resilience lies geometry. Every surface of PILOTI is curved in two directions, a principle essential for its ultra-thin strength. Where curvature alone is not enough, pleats are introduced—structural folds that grant stiffness while adding rhythm and ornament to the form. This delicate balance between curvature and pleat makes the canopy both feather-light and enduring.
The structure itself is born of THEVERYMANY’s signature system of structural strips. Each strip, cut from aluminum composite, consists of two plies of cross-directional material, pre-folded and mechanically fastened together with tens of thousands of rivets. These strips are joined not in the abstract, but through a patient, almost choreographed process: a “walking assembly.” Flat, two-dimensional strips rise into their three-dimensional form one rivet at a time, one neighbor at a time, until the puzzle of thousands becomes a seamless whole. No molds are needed, no scaffolding required—the canopy builds itself from within, piece by piece, strip by strip.
Adorning the entire rotunda, a constellation of small openings punctuates the surface. These apertures serve both as precise assembly details and as filters of light. By day, sunlight scatters through them into delicate patterns across the ground. By night, they glow with a soft, diffuse radiance, transforming PILOTI into a lantern for the community.
More than a gateway, PILOTI is a gathering space—an informal rotunda for the city, inviting everything from quiet conversations to weddings and celebrations. Beneath its canopy, Bellevue finds a place of wonder, a shelter for connection, and a landmark of lightness and innovation, crafted to be shared and remembered.
