People need protection from wind and weather not only for themselves, but also for what they hold dear. The client from the Erzgebirge Mountains desired a garage large enough to accommodate two cars, bicycles, a snow blower and other various equipment. To be constructed of wood, it was also to be unique in design.
Things don't always have to be new. For where there is plenty of wood, it is natural to constantly re-think how wood can be used as a building material. As a renewable resource and CO2 storage, wood is unbeatable. For the construction of the garage seemingly purposeless wooden plank remainders of varying length, thickness and age were stacked and then nailed. The different widths of the planks provide the facade with a distinctive structure.
The stacked plank design acts structurally and at the same time forms the façade. Like a log cabin, building corners were linked layer by layer. The individual elements could be assembled on site quickly thanks to effective prefabrication.
The green flat roof with hanging plants at the edge allow the garage to overgrow with time.
