Sixty-unit low income Senior Housing, part of HUD funded HOPE VI
redevelopment of Boyle Heights’ Pico Aliso Housing. The building sensitively
responds to the scale of the surrounding neighborhood and to maximize daylight in
the courtyard and to the individual apartments. Comprising (54) 1-bedroom, (6)
2-bedroom full service apartment homes for low-income seniors, a 2-bedroom
manager’s unit, surface parking, community room with kitchen, laundry and
library. The main entry plaza and “porch” provide views of First Street
activity, while the building surrounds a courtyard of intimate spaces for
gardening, reading and other quiet pursuits. This project provides a “gateway”
image for the entire redevelopment of the Pico Aliso site by the Housing
Authority of the City of Los Angeles.
