The original Jimmy’s Oriental Gardens Chinese Restaurant and Bar was built in 1945 for Jimmy Chung, and designed by the Architect Roy W. Cheesman. The interior oriental motif was appropriate for the business, and both unusual and popular in Santa Barbara. Over the next six decades, both the bar and restaurant operated continuously, but suffered considerable wear and tear.
When Jimmy’s heirs retired and closed the business, the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation acquired the building, and eventually leased the premises to the Lovejoy Family. The Trust and the Lovejoys were dedicated to restoring the bar, and commissioned the work shown in these photos and drawings in 2012. As much as possible of the original casework and decoration were retained and restored, including the bar, canopy and pendant lanterns. Modifications had to be made to conform to current accessibility and fire codes, and all of the plumbing, wiring and lighting were replaced. Since the bar itself had been shortened by ten feet in the past, careful work was required to duplicate the casework and return it to its original length and condition.
