Phoenix Design: A Workspace Crafted for Wellbeing
Design Concept and Philosophy
Phoenix Design is a distinguished product design studio known for transforming ‘insights into valuable product experiences that people will love’. To design their new Shanghai workspace, hcreates set out to create a workspace that places wellbeing at its core. Understanding the client’s business operations and the teams dynamics was an important part of the design teams process. This allowed for the creation of a workspace that is not only open and bright but also highly functional and people-centric. The design is anchored on wellness-based working principles, with a focus on details that foster collaboration and enhance the overall employee experience.
From Conceptualization to Implementation
Working with a company that is also in the design industry, destined this to be perfectly design lead project with a strong foundation of research, creativity and design practicality. The client’s desire to showcase their dedication to exceptional design was not limited to their products; they wanted their workspace to be a living testament to their commitment to quality and innovation.
Office Layout Selecting the perfect space was a critical first step. By choosing an old factory as the site for the new office, Phoenix Design was able to take advantage of the building’s naturally high ceilings and abundant natural light. The industrial character of the space was preserved, allowing its raw elements to become integral parts of the design, adding authenticity and charm to the workspace.
The client envisioned an open workspace that promotes easy collaboration, enabling colleagues to discuss ideas freely across desks. A variety of open collaboration areas, individual focus areas and relaxed desk spacing, fostered creativity and ensured a seamless flow of ideas. A social kitchen became a central feature of the office, designed not only as a space for relaxation and interaction among staff but also as a flexible venue for hosting events and exhibitions. The office also includes speciality areas such as a custom-designed workshop with specialized cabinetry to accommodate equipment and tooling. Flexible meeting zones allowed for multiple meeting function and sizes.
Furnishings and Fittings: A Blend of Aesthetics and Functionality
The design aesthetic of the space draws heavily from its industrial roots, with a strong emphasis on employee wellbeing. Recognizing that furniture is the most interacted-with element in a workspace, Phoenix Design prioritized comfort and ergonomics. Flexible furniture was chosen to adapt to individual working habits, ensuring that each employee’s needs are met. Features such as full-size, height-adjustable desks with integrated storage and personal lighting, large idea pin boards and flexible product display exemplify the commitment to creating a workspace that supports both comfort and productivity. Additionally, moveable furniture was selected to allow the configuration of workstations and breakout areas to evolve with project demands, maintaining a dynamic and responsive work environment.
Conclusion
hcreates design’s approach to this project shows their commitment to thoughtful, people-centric design. By prioritizing employee wellbeing and maintaining a focus on functionality and aesthetics, they have created a workspace that not only meets the client’s needs but also serves as a showcase of their design philosophy.
The result is a beautiful, well-considered design that enhances both individual and collective wellbeing.
