How can we get the concept of a sophisticated brand or business model to be felt?
Furthermore, how can this be achieved by preserving a recognizable identity at the same time?
We think that the one way is through the design of an iconic workspace.
With these two premises we started working on the renovation of a store specialised in software, hardware and furniture for workspaces, located in Ferrol (Spain). Our approach attempted to put into shape the disarray of the original space by opening up the interior towards the street and bringing the exterior indoors.
The space won its recognition by the generation a new architectural environment; a tapestry of iroko wooden square blocks which flows along the floor and climbs the walls, putting the new spatial frame of reference into shape. This acts as the selling area, which also works as a backdrop to the exhibition.
Facing the rectangular canvas formed by the iroko wooden square blocks showing the remarkable and subdued texture of the wooden radial cuts, lies a suspended ceiling composed of white lacquered fireproof MDF slats providing a dynamic counterpoint through a group of curves which move forward or backwards creating the sensation of a wavy ceiling that dances to the beat of the light filtering between elements.
A sense of contrast is present between the natural warmth of the wood and the coldness of the sea of white hanging waves.
From the outside, the interior space is exposed as much as possible. To make it feel as though it is a continuous uniform element, the opaque parts of the façade are covered by grey lacquered tempered glass, giving that sensation of unity through the reflections generated on the surfaces in daylight. At night, the lighting and the width of the shop-windows will definitely capture the attention of any passer-by.
A continuous white skin covered by a solid splayed acrylic resin sets a frame to the entrance and provides the façade with the required volumetric contrast as opposed to the plain surfaces.
