Farmácia Teles is a pharmacy located in Lourosa, a 9000 inhabitants town on the north of Portugal, in a mainly rural area. The area for this project was a 230 sqm groundfloor of an existing building (2009) on the town’s main ‘plaza’, where local market takes place every week. Our client asked for a new shop that would outstand over the existing buildings and at the same time would invite people to get in.
Our goal was then to create a simple yet modern shop that could communicate its interior with the exterior space by a big glass storefront. The pharmacy should be itself a showcase with a transparent space, allowing customers to observe the entire pharmacy and all the process of being served while waiting for a medicine. Our challenge was to convince the client that conservative town-dwellers would fancy their new pharmacy…
This transparency was achieved by having glass walls over commonly closed areas such as storage, back-office, aside attendance, allowing some privacy but still possible for customers to have a glance of what’s happening inside the shop. A transparent robot was designed but changed into an opaque solution due to financial restrains. All other walls were painted in white to allow colourful products to outstand on glass shelves.
To enhance this big storefront, that faces the main ‘plaza’, we decided to close the lateral wall (facing a small residential street) and paint it in black. To create some texture on this exterior wall, small showcases were conceived, to expose some products, illuminated by archictetural light. By this mean, during daylight we centre all the attentions on the main façade and invite customers to get in by a low ceiling entrance; during night, all the pharmacy is coloured in different colours, including the small showcases, keeping the shop communication over night time.
Simple and common materials were used such as glass and sheet-rock for walls, a PVC light coloured floor and LED illumination by a national company, Spectrolux.
