Simplicity, economy and functional efficiency, with architectural flair.
The Heathrow Pods at Terminal 5 went live in May 2011: pioneering, even futuristic , a new horizon in public transport.
The 'Personal Rapid Transit' pods are like driverless electric taxis: personal, on-demand, quick, certain and iconic. The world's first multi-destination PRT system was developed by Bristol-based ULTra PRT for BAA. GTA played a definitive part in planning the integration of the ULTra system into the complex airport environment, advising BAA prior to appointing ULTra and later developing guideway configurations that would ensure seamless experience for PRT passengers while maintaining all other existing site functions.
The design exemplifies GTA's special expertise for resolving technical, process and procurement challenges with economy and elegance. GTA architectural design of stations and ancillary buildings evolved through the three-year development to include product design of passenger interactive consoles and fixtures and fittings concourse side and guideway side.
GTA's role included aesthetic review of engineering design and design team lead on infrastructure aspects of user experience.
