An exercise in lighting perfection where the client and designer spent eight months designing and constructing the extravagant lighting system and interior layouts. Every piece of furniture, artwork and accessory was known, presented and positioned prior to design in order for the lighting designer to understand the size, shape and material qualities of each item. The lighting specification was then tailored to address each singular piece allowing for unprecedented accuracy of design.
Manufactures of the lighting product were custom fixtures by Edison Price Lighting, Hydrel, LiteLab, Befer Group, ETC controls, GE Lamps. Because of the large quantities of luminaries involved to create this highly stylized look, all fixtures and ceiling details were created in a custom matte black finish created by the client and lighting designer. After extensive mockups demonstrating the black effect ceiling the final color and sheen was selected and sent to the manufactures for implementation. The main ceiling illumination was achieved with instruments from Edison Price Lighting in the form of recessed low voltage accent fixtures or an extensive two circuit track system from LiteLab. Edison Price was selected because of the ability to order the deep dark light reflectors with custom cuts of 0°, 20° and 35° so the edge of the fixture reflector would line up and cradle the lamp angle. This controlled glare even more and prevented the interior of the light fixture being exposed in any way. The interior of the housings were also custom finished in the matte black to minimize any interior stray light the might occur. The LiteLab lighting elements were highly accessorized for 40° cutoff louvers and custom extended snoots to shield the light sources from view. Lamps were installed with tight beam angles of 4°, 9°, 10°, 15°, 25° and occasionally a 55° beam. The tightly focused beams allowed for careful adjustments highlighting each artifact and furniture piece with minimal spill onto surrounding architecture or surfaces. A single piece of furniture often had multiple beams of light illuminating it.
An additional difficult but important request from the client was that as a person traversed the space and engaged in living, no beam of light would every shine directly on them. This was achieved by careful location of the fixtures at a maximum of 30° aiming angles or less. These tight aiming restraints also added in controlling possible glare as most items were illuminated in an almost grazing fashion.
This created the signature look for the client and lighting designer, bringing all illuminated artifacts into dramatic, powerful and specific light. Color temperatures of mostly 2700°Kelvin with special metallic or stone artifacts were singled out with 3000°Kelvin sources to highlight the color palette and shine of the metallic nature.
The uplighting of the architecture was an ethereal counterpoint to all the downlight grazing of the interior furnishings. The uprights were custom fabricated by Hydrel with deep seated adjustable lamping that also included a custom signature matte black egg crate louver that was 1/2"x1/2"x1/2" in size for extra glare control. The louver combined with the deep seated lamps, as well as the physical placement of the uplights, kept glare at a minimum. One would have to walk directly to the wall and look straight down in order to see the lamp source.
The entire project was carefully circuited and programed with a consistency of aesthetics as the highest priority. The designer was insistent that no matter the brightness level selected all the rooms would be mastered to match that look and level. As one would walk through the various rooms and galleries of the residence and even to the exterior sidewalks and terraces there would be no jarring or aesthetic differences from the lighting what so ever. The consistency and exacting nature of the programming made this effect possible and the results were a spectacular visual zen like calm. With a quick selection from a few strategically placed control pads the owners will able to quickly select the desired preset look and implement it throughout the property.
As the evening would progress the property would move into lower and lower levels of brightness with certain artifacts holding higher luminance to create visual drama. The final preset was called "Dream Scene" in which every circuit was operating at 1%-5% dimmed power creating a stunning and surreal ambient glow. The clients would leave this on all night so that if they would wake up they would still see a beautiful interior but the brightness level would not interrupt their sleep cycle. Security men and their dogs were able to navigate the home on an hourly basis without the need for altering the lighting as well.
An optional button could be pressed that would activate motion sensors installed through out the residence in what ever scene was selected. That would allow the owners or security to travel from room to room with the lights rising from set level to 75% brightness as they passed through and then return to the preset level after leaving the area. All transition on the way down in dimming levels were programmed with two minute fades so not to be noticed. The transitions on raising dimming levels had a 10 second fade time for instant visual feedback.
This project was a very special endeavor of the love of light and what that light could do for extraordinary works of art by both the client and designer. The perfection required an extraordinary effort of both design precision and skillful physical adjustments of the lighting instruments. This style of illumination is stunningly beautiful in person and is also the most costly manner in which to implement lighting. It was a privilege to have a client willing to not only finance such an effort but it made it a joy because they were as passionate about the lighting as the lighting designer was.
