The project is located in Quito-Ecuador, South America. We tried to incorporate the classic with the contemporary design. This project is a PentHouse apartment in a well known area in Quito. The different steps that we took to complete this design contemplates the different kind of materials that we chose for the different areas. The material were chosen exclusively for each area, so they can complement each other rather than compete. Knowing the materials that we were going to install in each space, we came up with the idea to make the entire apartmet white and just leave the social area floor with a dark color. By doing this, the white wood panels on the walls and the white marble floor on the entrance start giving an interesting contrast between dark and white.
To reinforce the constrast between the two tones we created different reflected ceiling plans, which have a unique lighting design that gives each space a dramatic atmosphere. Some lighting details, as the wall in the living room, were created as a complement to the reflected ceiling design. As well, some of the design elements, like the chimney, were designed with the concept of mixing the classic with the contemporary elements. Meaning the materials and the design are classic part compared to the entire white wood panels around the walls in the living room and the lighting design in the space.
After finishing all the space designing we got to the part that we started placing the furniture. The client had some of the furniture, which gave us an idea of what had to be designed and what furniture had to be fixed. We tried to maintain the classic structure of the actual furniture, like chairs, sofas, dining table, and mixed it with a contempary fabric. The fabric and the decoration, as paintings, statues, rugs, helped us to give focal points around the spaces. These focal points were created because the different pieces of art stand out from the black and white. These contrasts helped us to strengthen our cocept of mixing the two different styles.
