This commission involved the conversion of the ground floor of a relatively narrow frontage terrace Arts and Crafts family house in Muswell Hill, London. Before the conversion, the kitchen was in the rather dark area in the middle of the plan, and part of the frontage onto the garden was occupied by a WC. The conversion opened up the whole floor into one continuous space. As the kitchen area is single storey it has been lit by a continuous skylight, while directly overlooking the dining area. The living area can be separated off by closing a wide set of folding doors. The WC has been moved to a new location off the entrance hall and the cellar stairs have been redesigned to form part of the main stair. Care has been taken to make the new design harmonise with the original Arts and Crafts details. A computer flythrough was used to ensure that the client could fully visualise the design before work started.
