Penguin Random House, a globally renowned publisher with nearly a century of history, is dedicated to fostering a universal love for reading. With an impressive annual output of up to 70,000 digital and 15,000 print titles, the company holds a special place in the hearts of readers worldwide. Its new office headquarters in Gurugram, designed by SJK Architects, reflects the evolving nature of work environments, shifting from an office-first to a hybrid model post-pandemic.
The design of the office encourages creativity and collaboration, with three interconnected clusters (Courtyards) forming the social heart of the space. These clusters offer diverse seating options to suit different working styles, from individual tasks to large group discussions. The central and eastern clusters feature lounge and round-table seating, while the western cluster houses a coffee bar and amphitheater for team meetings. Surrounding these clusters are workstations and meeting rooms, creating a welcoming atmosphere that supports both formal and informal work.
The space is infused with natural light and a restrained color palette of white and grey, creating a calming environment. The brand’s identity is woven subtly into the design, with framed book jackets and a handcrafted cement screen resembling books, incorporating penguin-shaped motifs. This thoughtful integration of brand elements enhances the sense of belonging and vibrancy. Overall, the design fosters a flexible, collaborative environment that inspires creativity, making it a space that supports the diverse needs of its users while promoting productivity.
