Pelican Self Storage is a storage hotel developed of upcycle concrete, which sets new standards for sustainable architecture and handling of construction waste. The project is a pioneer project within sustainable construction - and is the first building in Denmark developed by upcycle concrete.
Today when a concrete building is demolished, the standard procedure is to crush the concrete - and in case of recycling the CO2-heavy construction waste, it is used to refill roads. The concrete industry believes sustainable concrete already is a reality, because 96 percent of all concrete is recycled. But is it a sustainable solution to crush concrete and throw the materials in the soil as road fill?
With Pelican Self Storage Lendager Group challenges the standard procedure by upcycling the crushed concrete from the existing building to new concrete - produced directly on the construction site. It means that you avoid creating new gravel pits to produce concrete for the construction of the new building.
