The Greek word Pelagos means the open sea, but it is also the name of a special marine protected area in the Ligurian Sea : the pelagos sanctuary waters contain habitat suitable for the breeding and feeding needs of the entire complement of cetacean species in the Mediterranean Sea.Since the origins Genoa lived in strong relationship with the sea, until in late 1965 a controversial as well as peculiar elevated road, nicknamed “sopraelevata”, has visually and metaphorically separated the city from it.Before starting any discussion about the necessity of its demolition we have approached the raising problem of the car's noise affecting the city center with a temporary and simple technical solution: a sound barrier made with recycled wooden ribs combined with polycarbonate sheets. Here the new shape as a clear reference to the cetacean, the sea and its hidden life, trying to bring back the idea of the water where now it's concrete.
