Client: Municipality of Tyros
Location: Tyros
Year: 2016
The municipality of Tyros is characterized by an exceptional landscape, combining both mountain and coast. The village is mainly a tourists’ destination, because of its naturally beautiful waterfront, which carries the biggest part of the secondary sector’s installations (hotels, restaurants, cafes, markets etc) and unfortunately, is now characterized by a basic, linear, two way road, which is mainly used by cars.
This is exactly the basic cause of all problems arising here, such as the disturbance of the swimmers, cyclists and pedestrians, who face difficulties in walking, exercising, socialising and enjoying their time spent on the beach. As if it was not enough, they also have to face all the disturbing results of traffic noise, pollution and stress, not including the lack of green areas and finally heat island effects.
In this project our proposals aim to create all necessary circumstances for reconnecting people, promoting contemporary, environmental technology and enhancing the local economy creating a place of identity, a place-destination.
The main goal of this project is to regenerate the existing waterfront in order to render it safe, comfortable and friendly to the pedestrians, both permanent residents and tourists, who choose to spend their vacations in this small Greek village.
In order to promote walkability we create separate zones for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles of low velocity, when necessary, in order to achieve safety and clear mobility. Additionally, we introduce new open public places as destinations, for both action and relaxation. Playgrounds, open art spaces, mixed used areas and organised areas for events are some of the new places of the public realm that can revitalise the overall seafront zone and promote an interactive relationship between people and the environment, enhancing their social behaviour.
We, therefore, introduce new ecological materials, such as the permeable concrete pavement in order to achieve a sufficient water management, LED technology for an eco-friendly lighting design, and contemporary water jets solutions for both maintaining a comfortable standard for the local temperature and creating a new dialogue for action. We enhance the landscape with endemic flora, helping minimise heat island effects and embrace local ecosystems. Finally we use natural materials, like wood, stone, pebbles and gravel, in order to respect both nature and the feeling of being close to it, while participating and interacting with the new, regenerated landscape.
